We have been getting questions about coronavirus in relation to drinking water and have therefore produced this short information piece.
Until recently we had not heard anything of the potential of the coronavirus to be carried in water pipes and through the water systems in buildings. There is a news article now
(see it here) which indicates that the Hong Kong authorities are investigating if the virus can be carried in the water piping system.
According to other articles, the coronavirus is similar to influenza in that it causes respiratory illness. While the seasonal flu typically has a relatively high mortality in humans (the eventual mortality rate of cornavirus is yet to be determined), seasonal influenza is not typically known to be carried in water pipes and plumbing systems.
If it is the case that coronavirus can be passed via water lines, then the obvious answer is a UV water disinfection system (at least to help with the issue of possible waterborne transmission). While there is no industry data to indicate a UV Dose to kill coronavirus specifically, the long estabished UV Dose to produce a 3-log (99.9%) reduction of influenza virus in water is approximately 6.6 mJ/cm2. Any UV water disinfection system will provide much more than that when properly sized for flow rate and water quality. A larger UV dose will simply provide a higher log reduction of virus in the water (99.99% or 99.999% or higher).
While a UV water disinfection system can kill the virus in water, it will not help with airborne or surface borne transmission although this type of UV air treatment equipment is available on the market as well.
